Hannibal Cannibal Breaks Record

Blue skies and a cool morning welcomed a record-breaking 1,778 runners to the 15th Annual Hannibal Cannibal. For the second year in a row, the 2010 Cannibal broke all milestones for the race, topping 2009’s participation by 25% with racers from 26 states.

As the starting cannon went off at 7 a.m., runners and walkers took off along the scenic route through downtown Hannibal and out Highway 79. Along the way they were cheered on by volunteers and given water at aid stations manned by team members from the James E. Cary Cancer Center, the Hannibal Clinic, Hannibal Regional Medical Group, and the Emergency Department of Hannibal Regional Hospital. Volunteers from other hospital departments met the participants at the finish line with wet towels, water, and in a few cases, medical attention.

This year, funds from the Hannibal Cannibal go towards Hannibal Regional Hospital Foundation’s Comfort and Assurance Campaign. This campaign provides patients and their families with amenities such as Wi-Fi service, family communication system, care packages, and more.

“The Cannibal wouldn’t be possible without all of our fabulous volunteers and sponsors,” explained Robin Doyle, Hannibal Cannibal Race Director. “Although this year’s Cannibal is now history, planning for the July 2, 2011 race is underway. Thank you to all the participants for supporting Hannibal Regional Hospital, Hannibal Regional Hospital Foundation, the Hannibal Children’s Center, and National Tom Sawyer Days."
