Critical Decision Unit

Hannibal, MO – John C. Grossmeier, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hannibal Regional Hospital is pleased to announce the recent opening of the new Critical Decision Unit (CDU) at Hannibal Regional Hospital.  The Critical Decision Unit, an element of the hospital’s Invasive Cardiology Service, is the latest part of an ongoing $20 million expansion and renovation project at the hospital.

The Critical Decision Unit is a short-stay unit for patients receiving scheduled invasive cardiovascular evaluations in the hospital’s recently expanded Invasive Cardiology Service.  The CDU provides patients and their families with significantly more privacy, safety, space and comfort than previously available, including a flat-screen television in each room, comfortable family seating and an adjacent restroom.  The Unit also includes a dedicated family waiting area, private consultation room and ready access to the other services of the hospital.

“Everything in this new unit is completely state-of-the art,” said Mr. Grossmeier.  “This represents the continuation of a series of major improvements for the care of patients at Hannibal Regional Hospital.  This patient-centered facility, of which we are very proud, is representative of the importance we place on meeting the individual needs of those whom we serve. “

Immediately adjacent to the Critical Decision Unit are the hospital’s Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, the location in which both diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations are performed.  The location of the CDU and Catheterization Laboratories greatly reduces patient and family inconvenience and enables the provision of the best services and highest quality care.

The CDU is a ten room unit within the hospital with each room created for single patient occupancy.  Patients scheduled for a diagnostic cardiac catheterization are escorted to the CDU where they are met by a Registered Nurse, complete a pre-procedure assessment and are otherwise prepared for the procedure.  Special emphasis is placed upon education including diet and recovery.  Utilizing the many resources of Hannibal Regional Hospital, every effort is made to provide each patient with individualized care and support which meets their unique needs and circumstance.

“A close relationship with the interventional cardiac catheterization team, cardiologists, cardiac rehabilitation and HRH dieticians and nurses reinforces the multidisciplinary approach used to achieve a patient centered approach to care,” stated Sarah Bradshaw, Director of Nursing.  “The Critical Decision Unit is staffed with registered nurses who provide patients receiving diagnostic cardiac services specialized care conducive to their personalized needs.”
